Moneylender Anil Sananda, a cousin of Congress legislator Dilip Sananda, beat up a farmer for failing to repay a loan in Khamgaon township in Buldhana district on Wednesday.
The farmer later succumbed to injuries at the local hospital.
Police have registered a case of attempted murder against Anil and are looking for him.
“The murder was the outcome of a monetary transaction. Anil is absconding and we are looking for him,” said Buldhana district SP Himmatrao Deshabhratar.
The SP said adequate security cover has been provided to Dilip Sananda, the local legislator, in case of any possible reprisal after the incident.
According to reports, the victim Dashrath Kshirsagar had taken loans from Anil two years ago. Kshirsagar could not repay the loans in time due to crop failure. Anil had allegedly threatened him with dire consequences.
Kshirsagar’s elder son Vinod said Anil had created a scene at the vegetable market on Wednesday morning, insisting Kshirsagar repay the amount—Rs 4.5 lakhs—immediately. Anil then started beating him mercilessly.
Sanandas are “notorious” for money lending in Vidarbha. Anil’s cousin, the Congress MLA from Khamgaon, Dilip Sananda is among the top ten moneylenders in the region.
