The centrally sponsored scheme - MNREGA - is proving helpful for the general masses in the district. “The scheme has helped people not only to get works done and earn their livelihood, but also clean their surroundings especially old water sources like bowlis, khatris and wells,” said deputy commissioner Ashish Singhmar.

Singhmar said as many as 112 old water sources were properly managed in the district during the year by spending Rs 1 crore. He said this had helped to get clean water for drinking purposes. The work was undertaken in all developmental blocks of the district, namely Hamirpur, Sujanpur, Nadaun, Bijheri, Tounidevi and Bhoranj.

Singhmar said as many as 12,41,000 man-days were generated in the district last year by spending Rs 24,87,000. In all, 2,470 works were completed and handed over to the people for their use.

He said the administration was monitoring the works done under MNREGA at all levels and those found unfit were being punished as per the law of land.
