A string of irregularities of financial and technical nature were detected during a social audit of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Scheme (MNREGS) work in Kurai block of Seoni district last week.
This was the first time that such an extensive social audit of MNREGS along with a public hearing was conducted in the state.
The public hearing was conducted on December 6 at the conclusion of ten-day social audit process. During the hearing, Zila Panchayat CEO Priyanka Das directed a string of on-the-spot actions including the suspension of two officials.
Many other issues, including lack of awareness amongst the MNREGS wage seekers about their rights and improper conduction of gram sabhas, poor quality of the work undertaken and violation of time limits were pointed out by the social audit team.
The process was undertaken jointly by the National Institute of Rural Development and the MP Social Audit Society under directives of the ministry of rural development (MoRD). Bhopal-based social organisation Samarthan was associated as a member of the Audit Society.
The MoRD took cognizance of the newspaper reports related to rampant irregularities in Kurai block and directed that social audit should be conducted.
Gram Sabhas (special meetings at village level) were undertaken at all the 62 village panchayats in the Kurai block before the public hearing, deputy commissioner of MP Social Audit Society, Anita Vatsalya told HT.
Director of Samarthan, Yogesh Kumar said that the aim of the audit was to imbibe culture of accountability through to root out corruption.
