Unlike many political parties, which are scrambling to get celebrities to contest the elections, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has declared that it will not field any such public figures.

At the launch of MNS’s website, party chief Raj Thackeray said that he would field ordinary party workers.

“If I field a film star and he gets elected, he would be more interested in films and would neglect his duties. Then you all will blame me. I am not interested in such elements,” said Thackeray. “I want people who love Maharashtra and are ready to serve the people,” he added.

Calling his MNS cadres his greatest strength, Raj said that today’s political leaders had been small-time party workers at one time who had risen due to the exposure they got.

Raj added that celebrities were welcome if they left their profession and plunged into politics full time. MNS has a number of film stars like Marathi superstar Bharat Jadhav and Atul Parchure among its ranks.
