THE KAKADEV police on Wednesday had an unsavory experience when hundreds of people came out in support of a criminal minutes after a history sheeter and gangster, Dheeraj Gupta alias Chaddhi, was arrested from Vijay Nagar area.

Some local leaders of a particular political party even reached Kakadev police station and demanded release of the criminal. However, police didn’t relent and sent the criminal to jail on several charges including the murder of Guddan Gupta, son of a corporate, and firing on a student union leader a few days back.

Earlier, minutes after the arrest of Dheeraj Chaddhi, rumors started doing rounds that police had picked up Chaddhi for encounter.

Soon hundreds of his supporters came on the road, demanding release of Dheeraj Chaddhi, who, according to sources in the police department, had clout in Vijay Nagar area.

According to information, Kakadev police was tipped off that notorious criminal Dheeraj Chaddhi was coming to his aunt’s house at Vijay Nagar under Kakadev police station around 10 am on Wednesday.

When Dheeraj Chaddhi was getting off his car at Vijay Nagar, the police surrounded him. Chaddhi, on seeing the police, climbed on to the terrace of a house there. Some police personnel too chased him and went on to the rooftop.

When Dheeraj Chaddhi tried to escape by jumping from the second floor of the house, he fractured his leg and was then arrested.

Some police personnel also jumped from the terrace and sustained injuries.
The police took Chaddhi to Kakadev police station and then to LLR hospital for his medical examination and first aid.  But the cops had a tough time in controlling a mob of nearly 150 people that had gathered at the police station to demand the gangster’s release.

Later, police dispersed the crowd by resorting to mild lathi charge.

Commenting over the arrest of Dheeraj Chaddhi, SP (west) Awdhesh Kumar told Hindustan Times, “The arrested criminal was notorious for his anti-social activities.”
