Irate mob last night set on fire a house owned by a serial killer, who was recently arrested for raping a girl and killing two others.

Police stated that mob, comprising of unidentified persons, last night, set on fire the house of Mahanand Naik (40) at Taravalem village in Shiroda town, 60 kms from here. Mahanand, who was arrested a fortnight ago for raping and blackmailing his wife's friend, had revealed that he had killed two other young girls in last 14 years.

The serial killer used to befriend girls and later kill them by taking them to isolated spot.

Darshan Naik, a girl from Borim village, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in 1994 and Yogita Naik was found dead this year.

"We are still interrogating him and more cases are likely to be unearthed," Police Inspector C L Patil told PTI. As the confessions of the killer were published in media, the irate mob attacked Naik's house last night. The crowd first brought out inmates and later set the house on fire, police stated.

Police have registered offence against unknown persons in this case. "We are still investigating the offence. The crowd had dispersed before police could arrive there," Patil said.
