A mob on Saturday set ablaze a police station and some vehicles during a protest against the alleged police inaction in Orissa's Bargarh district.
The incident took place at Paikamal in Bargarh district about 120 km from in Bargarh on Saturday evening when over 1,000 people entered into the police station and set it on fire, Superintendent of Police Ashok Biswal told PTI.
Only two constables were present when the incident happened, the SP said, adding that no one was arrested so far as police and fire brigade men were busy dousing the flames.
One lady constable who tried to prevent the mob, was allegedly assaulted, Biswal said.
Besides furniture, a large number of official documents were damaged in the incident, police said.
The alleged police failure in arresting one Ganda Nag, a local businessman wanted in a number of cases reportedly irked the local people who in turn attacked on the police station setting it on fire.
While officer-in-charge of Paikamal police station was away, only two constables were manning the police station. They were outnumbered by the mob which went berserk, sources said.
Senior officials including the SP have rushed to the spot as the situation remained tense.
