An angry mob thrashed three men accused of raping a 17-year-old girl here when the police took them to a hospital for medical check-up.

The three – Shahid Sayed, Tariq Sayed and Abu Bakr – gang-raped a school student in broad daylight inside an Opel Corsa car on Friday.

The men, two of them sons of serving policemen, were being taken out of the hospital on Saturday when they were surrounded by the mob, including women.

The three were thrown to the ground, punched and kicked even though the policemen tried to protect them. After about 20 minutes, the police managed to take them away.

The condition of one of the three – all in the age group of 25 to 30 years – is serious, the police said, refusing, however, to divulge his identity.

Police sources, who did not wish to be identified, said the girl and a male friend were on their way to a coaching centre early Friday in the Majura Gate area of the city when the three forced them into the car, posing as policemen.

Inside the moving car, they tied up the victim’s friend and took turns to rape the girl. They allegedly filmed it on their mobile phone cameras.

Afterwards, they threw the girl and her friend out of the car at the spot from where they had picked them up.

The police, looking for the car, found that it belonged to a circle inspector of police in Dholka town in Ahmedabad district. The police first arrested the son of the car owner, Shahid, and later picked up the other two – his neighbours.
