Establishing the identity of a criminal, caught or intercepted by a police patrol in this NCR town has been made easier with the launch of special mobile vans — ‘Pehchan Kaun’.

The van, launched on Monday, has been equipped with computers and other devices to help the police know if the person they have caught has a criminal past or not.

The computers will have fingerprints and other data of over 26,000 criminals and computerised touch pads so that the fingerprints of an accused could be recorded and matched with the data in the van’s computer.

The Haryana police had come out with this unique concept in the view of the fact that NCR towns such as Gurgaon and Faridabad are prone to a lot of in-transit criminals. The new system will not only help the police in catching repeated offenders but also update their records on the go.

The first such van was inaugurated in Panipat. It was Faridabad’s turn on Monday. “Lakhs of people from Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi visit Faridabad. With such a huge in-transit population, the new system will help the police keep an eagle’s eye on suspects and the movement of inter-state criminals,” said SS Kapur, Commissioner of Police, Faridabad, after launching the vehicle.

Layak Ram Dabas, Director, State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB) told Hindustan Times that similar vans will be launched in Sonipat, Jaggar and Rohtak districts of Haryana on Tuesday.

“Of 26,500 criminals, whose data has been loaded in Pehchan Kaun, 17000 are from Haryana and the rest are from Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, etc,” Dabas said.
