A moderate quake measuring 5.6 shook the New Britain region of Papua New Guinea early on Thursday, meteorologists said, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
The quake occurred at 5:08 am (0038 IST) with its epicentre 110 kms west of Kandrian at a depth of 67 kilometres, the US Geological Survey said.
The reading was based on the open-ended Moment Magnitude scale, now used by US seismologists, which measures the area of the fault that ruptured and the total energy released.
