Himatnagar (North Gujarat) MLA Praful Patel will fill in for former junior home minister Amit Shah, now in jail for allegedly masterminding the encounter killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inducted four new ministers in his cabinet.

Apart from Patel, the others are Jamnagar MLA Vasuben Trivedi (minister of state for higher education and women and child development), Visavadar MLA Kanubhai Bhalala (minister of state for agriculture and water resources), and Ahmedabad (City) MLA Pradipsinh Jadeja (minister of state for law and justice and parliamentary affairs).

After the induction of the four, there are now 21 ministers, of whom 10 hold hold the cabinet rank.

Expanding the cabinet was necessary because Shah was handling 10 portfolios, which were distributed among three ministers after his resignation.

Before Shah, Mayaben Kodanani had to resign as minister for women and child development after revelations of her alleged role in the Naroda Patiya massacre in Ahmedabad in the 2002 Gujarat riots. She is now out on bail.
