A Muslim body today claimed that the Narendra Modi government in Gujarat tortured prisoners, including those accused in the Ahmedabad serial blasts' case, lodged at Sabarmati Central Jail and denied them medical treatment.
"The prisoners at the Sabarmati Central Jail in Ahmedabad have been severely beaten by the jail staff and police personnel in the last few days," President of All India Muslim Majlis-e Mushawarat Zafrul Islam claimed.
He alleged that most of the prisoners tortured were booked under anti-terror laws and came from the minority community.
Some of the inmates are seriously injured but are denied medical treatment, he alleged and requested the Gujarat High Court and the Supreme Court to intervene immediately to monitor the jail and save the lives of the inmates.
It was alleged that Sajid Mansuri, an accused in the serial blasts, was killed and undertrials Younus Mansuri and Shahnawaz Gandhi were badly injured after being beaten up.
"The problem started when the inmates filed a PIL in the Gujarat High Court on March 23 praying for transfer of the jailor V Chandrashekar," said Shakeel Ahmed, Director of Association for Protection of Civil Rights.
He claimed that the following day, the jailor went on a short leave and Pargi, a new officer, joined duty. Since then, the torture started, Ahmed claimed, adding that it led to a hunger strike by around 70 per cent of the inmates since.
The strike started from March 25, Ahmed said.
Since Saturday, no one including lawyers have been allowed to meet the prisoners, he claimed and demanded immediate assess to the undertrials.
