The Belgaum police have dropped all charges and released Waqas Barmavar, the 25-year-old AAP activist and MBA student from Bhatkal who was arrested last Saturday on the suspicion that he had circulated an MMS ridiculing Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He was handed over to his family and AAP activists by the Belgaum police on Monday evening even as Jayanth Tinaikar, the RSS activist who lodged the complaint, maintained that the police acted under political pressure.

Belgaum superintendent of police Chandragupta, however, told reporters that no evidence could be found against Barmavar and that Tinaikar had given the police the wrong mobile number. Chandragupta also said the complainant had acted in haste.

The investigation to trace the source of the MMS, nevertheless, continues. And senior police officials confirmed that more than one team of cyber crime experts have been assigned to the task.
