Hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted his displeasure over the temple dedicated to him in Kotharia in Gujarat's Rajkot district, organisers on Thursday decided to cover up his idol and replace it with that of Bharat Mata or Mother India.
A 'shocked' Modi had tweeted he was 'appalled' over the news that a temple was being built for him.
"Have seen the news about a Temple being built in my name. I was appalled. This is shocking & against India's great traditions," Modi posted on his official handle.
"Building such Temples is not what our culture teaches us. Personally, it made me very sad. Would urge those doing it not to do it," he added.
The Prime Minister also urged those involved in building the temple to devote their time and resources to fulfill his "dream of a Clean India."
The opening ceremony which was scheduled for Sunday has been cancelled and the organisers will now convert it into a temple for Bharat Mata or Mother India.
The temple built by Modi's staunch supporters had his idol clad in his trademark half sleeve kurta and jacket with lotus embossed saffron dupatta. They collected around Rs. 4.5 lakh to build the temple and the idol cost them Rs. 1.6 lakh.'
They had earlier invited local BJP leaders, including Rajkot MP and Union minister Mohanbhai Kundaria, for the opening ceremony of the temple.
The village, near Rajkot city, was recently merged with Rajkot Municipal Corporation area.
The village panchayat had originally given 350 square yard of land to build a temple for Mother India 10 years ago, but BJP workers installed Modi's idol after he became the Prime Minister instead.
After Modi's tweets, his supporters have decided to follow the original plan of dedicating the temple to Mother India.
