Just minutes after news spread on Tuesday of the arrest of Delhi's law minister Jitender Singh Tomar for allegedly faking his law degree, AAP supporters took to Twitter to voice their anger against the BJP government at the centre.
#ModiScaredOfArvind was India's top Twitter trend within hours. According to a Twitter search engine, an average of 8,358 tweets were being posted every hour using the hashtag.
Those angered by the arrest mainly targeted human resource development minister Smriti Irani. A Delhi court recently reserved till June 24 its ruling on a complaint filed against her for allegedly giving “false” information about her educational qualification in affidavits filed with the Election Commission.
Delhi Law Minister Jitendra Singh Tomar arrested in Hauz Khas for allegedly filing false affidavit. Does Delhi Police know Smriti Irani?— Tinu Cherian Abraham (@tinucherian) June 9, 2015
What abt Smriti Irani's fake Yale degree and lying affidavits? Will she also be arrested soon?
Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi too was targeted for refusing to comment on the issue as he was “in a meeting” and had no idea about Tomar's detention.
If Delhi Police chief doesn't know about arrest about a minister, it shows orders are coming from somewhere else.
Dear Election Commionser of India, Time to register Delhi Police as a political party.— Tinu Cherian Abraham (@tinucherian) June 9, 2015
There's a database of all affidavits filed by all candidates in Lok Sabha & Vidhan Sabha elections since 2004. Lot of scope for arrests.
Why did they conveniently forget that the matter is lying with the court to decide? Police must have waited. Cowardly.
In general, many claimed the BJP fears the AAP and thus the arrest was the result of a political vendetta and nothing more.
Are we moving away from democratic system? Do the BJP have secret agenda of making India into a dictator ruled State ? #ModiScaredOfArvind— Muzzammil Hamidani (@MuzzammilAap) June 9, 2015
Never seen such a case of tug of war btwn state & Central government. BJP clearly frightened of AAP & trying to choke them.
I smell President's rule in near future. Center doing everything to prove Delhi wrong.
Not every tweet was in favour of Tomar and AAP. Many ridiculed the hashtag and said it was a joke.
