Absconding Orissa top cop Bidya Bhusan Mohanty, wanted by the Rajasthan police for helping and abetting the escape of his son Biti, who was convicted for raping a German tourist, surrendered on Thursday in a city court.

The additional chief judicial magistrate Rajender Kumar Bansal sent the suspended DGP (home guards) to judicial custody till January 23.

The judge rejected his bail application and sent him to the Jaipur central jail.

Superintendent of police, VK Singh told

HT

that Mohanty surrendered before the court at 10.30 am.

"We were expecting Mohanty's arrival anytime, hence kept a tight vigil on the premises of the court to maintain peace," Singh said.

Mohanty had given a surety bond of Rs 50,000 for permitting his son Biti on parole following his conviction at a fast track court in Alwar for raping a German tourist 7 years ago. He had jumped parole on December 4, 2006.

Soon after Mohanty surrendered in Jaipur, his 75-year-old mother Radharani said her son was innocent and being harassed without any reason.

Speaking to

Hindustan Times

at her Cuttack residence, Radharani said, "Rajasthan police has been unjust to my son who has committed no wrong in his entire career as a police officer."
