Mahindra United and Mohun Bagan started their Durand Cup campaign in style with wins in the quarterfinal league stage matches, at the Ambedkar Stadium, New Delhi on Sunday.
National league champions Mahindra United defeated Air India 2-1, while Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan vanquished Sporting Clube de Goa by the same score line.
All eyes were on Brazilian Jose Ramirez Barreto, who was playing his first match of the season for Mohun Bagan after a long injury lay-off, did not disappoint by scoring the winner in the 75th minute for Kolkata team after Dulal Biswas drew the first blood two minutes earlier.
Dudu Omagbemi reduced the margin for the Goan club in the 79th minute.
The last time Barreto played in the city was in 2000, when he helped Mohun Bagan to lift the Durand title.
In the opening encounter, Filipe Azevedos scored a brace for the Mahindra United. Paresh Shivalkar scored the consolation goal for Air India.
