The revelry after an IPL match took an ugly turn at a five-star hotel in Delhi in the early hours of Friday when an Australian cricketer allegedly molested a US national in her room in the hotel, thrashed her companion and was later arrested by the Delhi Police.
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batsman Luke Pomersbach was later given interim bail and is to be produced before the court by the police with CCTV footage on Saturday.
The victim's fiancé was allegedly assaulted by Pomersbach after he told the player to leave their room. He is in the ICU at Primus Hospital in Chanakyapuri with injuries to his left ear.
The woman and her fiance, Sahil Peerzada, a Mumbai-based businessman, were partying at a pub in the ITC Maurya Sheraton after the RCB-Delhi Daredevils match in New Delhi on Thursday. Both the couple and the RCB players were staying at the hotel.
The couple left the party around 3.30am to go to their room on the 16th floor.
"Pomersbach followed us to our room. He insisted on having some drinks with us. My fiancé is a nice guy and didn't want to say no," the victim said.
"I thought the boys were partying, so I told my fiancé I wanted to go to sleep. When I was making my way to the bedroom, Pomersbach came from behind and groped me. He held my hand and also tried to kiss me. When my fiance intervened and asked him to leave, he punched him repeatedly," she said.
She said Pomersbach left the room but the drama didn't end there. Half an hour later, he reportedly returned to their room.
Said a senior police officer, "This time a hotel guard was escorting him. Pomersbach repeatedly knocked on the door and tried to enter forcibly. When the victim didn't open the door, Pomersbach left."
The police said they reached the hotel after receiving a call from the victim and found that Peerzada had been taken to a hospital by the hotel security.
"Around 7am, we were in hospital. As we were recording the victim's statement, Pomersbach and the city coordinator of IPL walked into the hospital. The victim immediately identified him and he was detained," the officer said.
