Former media baron Peter Mukerjea, who was brought to Delhi by the CBI as part of the investigation into the 2012 murder of his stepdaughter Sheena Bora, confronted a flurry of questions from the agency on Tuesday regarding his financial dealings.

The CBI suspect financial transactions as the main motive behind the crime.

The 24-year-old Sheena was allegedly strangled by mother Indrani Mukerjea, her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna and driver Shyam Rai. The body was burnt and buried in a Raigad forest. Peter’s wife Indrani maintained all along that Sheena had settled down in Los Angeles, until an anonymous caller informed Mumbai police this year about the gruesome murder that has now captivated the nation.

On Tuesday, Peter was asked if he had booked the car that was allegedly used by Indrani in the crime. At the time, he was allegedly holidaying in the UK.

Among the financial aspects under the agency’s scanner is a 2004 transaction, wherein Indrani allegedly named Sheena in her 2004 will as the heir to a south Delhi flat, which she owned jointly with Peter.

“Indrani had claimed that the flat’s half-ownership was with her and enclosed a copy of Peter’s will, according to which he gave his half to his wife as well,” said a source.

The CBI is examining the genuineness of Peter’s signatures on the photocopy of his will that was allegedly annexed to Indrani’s will.

Peter’s son Rahul, who was engaged to Sheena, denied the “genuineness of Peter’s signatures” on the photocopy, according to the CBI charge-sheet.

“Indrani’s will was in Sheena’s possession. The property was later sold in 2010 by Indrani and Peter. We are trying to find out what led to the sale,” said the source.

Sheena shifted from Guwahati to Mumbai in 2005 and met Rahul in 2008 after he arrived from Britain.

Peter was asked if was aware of a Mumbai-based “three BHK flat” that could have been an alleged murder trigger. The CBI charge-sheet says that minutes after abducting and strangling her daughter, Indrani told Rai: “Three BHK ka flat Sheena ko mil gaya hain.”

The CBI suspects Indrani went after Sheena as she thought her daughter and Rahul will corner most of Peter’s assets as the father doted on his son.
