Was 'Bastar Tiger' Mahendra Karma, face of Salwa Judum, the real target in Naxal attack?

Congress leader Mahendra Karma, 62, had survived at least four attempts on his life by suspected Maoists. The fifth, on Saturday, proved fatal. The rebels had been gunning for the powerful tribal leader of Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region ever since he emerged at the forefront of Salwa Judum, the (now disbanded) anti-Naxalite vigilante movement. Salwa Judum — Peace March or Purification Hunt in tribal Gondi language — saw young tribals in Chhattisgarh being armed with heavy weaponry to take on Maoists, most of whom are tribals.

Betting case: BCCI suspends Gurunath Meiyappan

A beleaguered BCCI on Sunday suspended Chennai Super Kings' CEO Gurunath Meiyappan, who was arrested for alleged involvement in betting, pending an inquiry into his role in the T20 spot-fixing scandal that has shaken the core of Indian cricket. Meiyappan, who is the son-in-law of BCCI president N Srinivasan, was arrested by the Mumbai Police on Friday for allegedly indulging in betting.

Bihar: days after gangrape, friend marries victim

A 24-year-old engineering student on Friday married his friend, a 22-year-old woman, who was reportedly gangraped in Bihar’s Banka district in his presence, last week. “I did this as much out of my love for her as to save her life. She would not have lived had I not agreed to marry her,” the groom told HT. On Tuesday, the two of them were visiting Mandar Hill, 290 km from Patna, when they were accosted by some shepherds. While the man was beaten up, the woman was raped by all three men, one after another.

Rauf ‘dada’ was friends with bookie, Vindoo for two years

The role of Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf is prominently emerging in the betting case registered by the Mumbai crime branch. Though the crime branch is yet to decide on whether they would be making him an accused in their case, officials said they were aware that Rauf known as 'Dada' was a friend of bookies Pawan Jaipur, and also of Vindoo Dara Singh since the past two years.
