A 37-year-old Kurla resident murdered her 20-year-old daughter to keep her extramarital affair under wraps.
The victim, Sanjira Sheikh, died on Saturday following multiple head injuries. The post-mortem report revealed that she died after being hit on her head by a heavy, blunt, iron object.
According to the VB Nagar police, the accused, Janu Khatun Sheikh had an illicit relationship with a 19-year-old man, Ranjit Yadav.
“We had rounded up Khatun for inquiry on Sunday and after prolonged questioning, she confessed to the murder. We arrested Yadav the same night,” said Senior Inspector K.S. Choudhary.
According to the police, Khatun and Yadav killed Sanjira after the girl accidentally learnt about their illicit affair.
The accused lived with her husband, Mohammed Rustam Sheikh and her daughter Sanjira at the Housing Development Infrastructure Limited construction site at Kurla (West). While Rustam worked as a fitter at the site, Khatun was a housewife. “Khatun rushed Sanjira to the dispensary claiming Sanjira had been murdered while Khatun was out to fetch water,” said Police Inspector Shashikant Mane.
“Khatun’s statement had several contradictions and as she did not even shed a single tear, we grew suspicious and grilled her further after which she confessed to killing Sanjira accidentally,” said Choudhary.
On Saturday, Sanjira returned to find Khatun and Yadav at their house. “Fearing Sanjira would tell her husband, Khatun allegedly hit her with an iron rod. Sheikh claimed that her intention was not to kill Sanjira but merely keep her relationship under wraps,” said Mane.
