Police on Monday arrested six panchayat secretaries and two sarpanch in connection with mass embezzlement in the year 2010 in MNREGA in Sendhwa janpad panchayat area.
Sendhwa sub-divisional officer of police (SDOP) MS Thakur said that panchayat secretaries of Sirwel, Dhawda, Chikhli, Jhirijamli, Chithrai and Nandia and sarpanch of Chikhli and Nandia have been arrested under IPC 420, 409, 467, 468 and 120B and produced before a Sendhwa court. The court has sent them to judicial remand on Monday evening.
Police on May 23, 2012, had registered a case on the complaint of zila panchayat against the then CEO janpad panchayat Sendhwa Lakhan Singh Rajput, the then bank manager of SBI branch of Malwan Rajesh Hadke, three firms, 23 sarpanch and 23 panchayat secretaries. The CEO and the bank manager were arrested earlier.
SDOP Thakur said that all accused made embezzlement of more than Rs 5 crore by various frauds at many levels in Sendhwa janpad panchayat in 2010. The said amount was deposited in 22 village panchayat's fake accounts, but was drawn by the accused without doing any work under MNREGA.
The sarpanch and secretaries submitted a memorandum pleading that they were not involved in the scam, but the investigations showed that the cheques were signed by them only for drawing the amount.
The big fishes (the three proprietors of firms) are out of net as they are still to be recognised by the police. The SDOP said that other accused will be arrested after the inquiry report of hand writing experts. He said that three proprietors of the firms were not detected yet and in the scrutiny the firms were found fake.
