Four Congress party workers were injured on Monday when the son of a BJP MLA, Pratibha Singh, allegedly opened fire at them in Mankhedi village under the Jabalpur Lok Sabha. The incident followed a dispute during political campaigning in the area, police said.
Four BJP workers were also injured as stones were thrown after the firing incident.
“Golu Singh, who has a past criminal record, fired at his rivals following a dispute,” deputy inspector general Makrand Deoskar said. Four Congress workers — Abhay Singh, Durjan Patel, Rakesh Patel and Nilesh Patel — were admitted to the Jabalpur government medical college. Their condition was said to be stable.
The BJP MLA could not be immediately contacted.
Meanwhile, the Congress candidate from the Jabalpur Lok Sabha seat, Vivek Tankha, demanded the Election Commission replace the district authorities engaged in election work. Tankha said no action was taken even after he informed top police officials about the incident. He also alleged that the town inspector was an agent of the BJP.
Golu Singh was not arrested immediately after the incident, the police said.
