A woman allegedly killed her 3-year-old daughter by throwing her into a well at the behest of her husband to help him implicate his rivals, police said.
The husband, police said, also wanted the woman to kill herself along with the infant, but she could not muster courage to end her life.
The shocking incident occurred in Brijpuri village in Sagar district on Tuesday morning.
According to Banda police station officers, Jhajhar Lodhi, a resident of Brijpuri, hatched a conspiracy to take revenge on his rivals whose complaint with police had led to the arrest of some of the members of his family.
Lodhi allegedly asked his wife Rekha to jump into the well along with their daughter Raksha, so that he could implicate his rivals in connection with their death.
Obeying her husband’s words, Rekha went near a well and threw her child into it, but could not muster courage to commit suicide.
As soon as Rekha left the house to execute her husband's plan, the latter immediately left for the police station to lodge a missing persons report of his wife and daughter, the officers said.
When Lodhi lodged the complaint, he hardly knew that Rekha was alive. A police team reached the village and a search operation was launched, during which the personnel found the girl’s body in the well.
However, Rekha was found at a relative’s place. During interrogation, she disclosed her husband's plan and her act before the police. Police have registered a case against the couple and arrested them, an officer said.
