A jilted lover, who fired at a girl for rejecting his marriage proposal on Saturday afternoon, ended his life by hanging himself on Saturday night.

Unn police recovered Deepak's body on Sunday afternoon from an agriculture field on the outskirts of Raibidpura village, about 20km north of Khargone district headquarters.

On Saturday afternoon, 22-year-old Deepak approached Arpita Gurjjar, a resident of Raibidpura village, for marriage. When she refused to marry him, he fired at her.

According to the girl's relative, she is still critical as the bullet passed by her ear and she had a narrow escape.

Meanwhile, fearing arrest, Deepak ended his life on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.

Arpita’s mother told HT that her daughter used to take chemistry coaching from the Class 11 boy. For the last five months, Deepak had been pressurising her daughter for marriage. "She rejected his proposal every time. Deepak even threatened her three-four times in the last six months," said Arpita’s mother.

On Saturday, when Arpita was on her way to college, Deepak was waiting for her at the bus stop. He shot at the girl but she had a narrow escape. She received wounds in her ear and head.

As the girl raised an alarm, locals rushed to her rescue and Deepak fled from the spot. The police have registered a case against him under Section 307 of IPC and started a search operation.
