A TV serial on crime, on Monday night, infused courage in a 10-year-girl to disclose to her parents that she was raped by her meditation teacher about a month back, in Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh, about 430 kilometers southeast of Bhopal.

According to police, the girl along with her family members were watching a TV serial on Monday night. She suddenly ran to her room and started crying when her parents followed and quizzed her. She eventually revealed to them the ordeal she underwent on July 18 because of the rape by her meditation teacher.

The accused, Mahesh Korwane, was arrested on Tuesday evening after the parents registered a complaint at the Kotwali police station, under section 376 of IPC and Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO).

Kotwali police station in-charge in Balaghat PK Patel said the accused was working at a private meditation training centre at Balaghat town. The victim used to go to the Centre for a meditation training.

“After watching the TV serial, the girl started sobbing and when parents asked her about the reason, she narrated her ordeal. The accused has been arrested and being interrogated,” Patel told HT.

On July 18, the accused, a 33-year-old resident of Bhilai town of Chhattisgarh, raped the girl and threatened her with dire consequence if she was to disclose the incident to anyone, said Patel.

He further said the girl kept mum as she was scared by the Korwane’s threat and the incident.
