It was but a Raksha Bandhan celebration with a political undertone. A group of 24 young women were gifted a kilogram each of tuar daal (pulses) and onions after tying Rakhis to Madhya Pradesh Youth Congress leaders.
Actually, it was a protest organised by the Youth Congress against the surging prices of onions and pulses across the country. Party workers raised slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP-led state government during the function.
The women, coming from different parts of the city, tied Rakhis to Youth Congress district president Manoj Shukla and district Congress president PC Sharma. They, then, received packets of pulses and onions as gifts.

Shukla said the organisation wanted to highlight the fact that the state government was not at all serious on the issue of price hike.
“They are supporting the hoarders. If they had brought in control order, prices would not have spiraled so much,” he said.
Somali Sahu, a housewife from Chhola locality who was a part of the ceremony, said, “Purchasing and using pulses and onions that were once the most common ingredient of daily food has become a dream for us. Getting them as gift is most satisfying.”
Sonika Meena, another woman who attended the Youth Congress function, said, “I wanted to show my support to the protest on price rise. Managing kitchen budget has indeed become a tough task.”
