ANGERED BY power interruption shortly before Aarti in a temple at Ashta on a festival day, a mob ransacked and set afire the office of the MPSEB Divisional Engineer and also set on fire some vehicles parked on the office compound. Later, a road blockade was held on the busy Indore-Bhopal Highway, which lasted for over two hours.

The Ashta fire brigade extinguished the fire that burnt some office record also. At least three vehicles were damaged. In the absence of senior district officers, Jails Minister Atar Singh, who got stranded on the highway due to blockade, somehow managed to pursue the residents to abandon the blockade.

Earlier, the MPSEB officials are learnt to have assured the people of Ashta that smooth flow of power would be maintained during the Aarti. Expelled Bharatiya Janata Party leader Uma Bharti’s convoy was stopped along with other vehicles.

The sadhvi, who was on her way from Ujjain to Bhopal, could proceed further only after the intervention of senior police officers.
