As reported by HT on Friday, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar have been “rested” for the first three ODIs against the West Indies.
While Virender Sehwag has been elevated to captaincy for the five-match series, Yuvraj Singh is the conspicuous exclusion from the 15-member squad.
After an hour-long selection committee meeting at the BCCI headquarters, following the fourth day's play of the third Test , the Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary issued a statement along with the squad list.
“Sachin Tendulkar has been rested. Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been rested for the series. Yuvraj Singh was not considered for selection, as he has informed that he is not fully fit.”
If one's wondering that Yuvraj, who was dropped from the Test squad after a poor show in the first two matches, is yet to recover from the lung infection that forced him to skip the West Indies tour earlier this year, that's not the case.
It was learnt that Yuvraj, unhappy with his fitness levels, has volunteered to work on it in the domestic circuit. While interacting with the selectors during the meeting, Yuvraj said “he wasn't happy with his fitness and wants to be fully fit and in form by scoring runs in first-class cricket”.
While one-day specialists Suresh Raina, Parthiv Patel, Manoj Tiwary, Ravindra Jadeja and R Vinay Kumar have retained their places in the squad, it remains to be seen if leg-spinner Rahul Sharma earns his debut during the series.
Squad for first three ODIs: Virender Sehwag (capt), Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Suresh Raina, Manoj Tiwary, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Parthiv Patel (wk), R Ashwin, Praveen Kumar, R Vinay Kumar, Umesh Yadav, Varun Aaron, Rahul Sharma.
