Family members of Mukesh Kochar, the man recently accused of match-fixing, are denying vehemently his involvement in the case.
“Mukesh is my elder brother. He is not a bookie,” Rakesh Kochar told Hindustan Times on phone on Sunday, adding, “my parents and the entire
family is shocked after the news about allegation of his involvement in match-fixing.”
“I met Mukesh on January 13 at the Golf Course in New Delhi,” Rakesh claimed, adding that after his name surfaced in the case, he did not make any contact with him. He said he came to know about the scandal through media.
“My brother is a businessman living in Dubai for the past about 22 years,” said Rakesh, a senior officer in the Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW), Varanasi.
Rakesh said, “everything will come out in the open, eventually. My parents and I are of the firm belief that he can never be a bookie as reported.”
Asked if his brother was being implicated, he said, “I cannot comment on this sitting in Varanasi. But, my younger brother, can never
resort to such things keeping in view his business engagements and his sound family background.”
It may be mentioned that Mukesh Kochar’s name surfaced recently in the match-fixing scandal following his conversation with West-Indies all-rounder Marlon Samuels which Nagpur police claimed to have tapped.
The mother of Samuel, Daphne Lunan, was also quoted as saying that her son and Mukesh Kochar had been friends for six years and their relationship went beyond cricket.
