District Electoral Officer and city’s DM Ajay Kumar Upadhyay told PTI that the nomination papers of 17 candidates, including Ansari, were found valid while scrutiny.
Ansari is lodged in the Ghazipur jail for over three years in the BJP MLA Krishnanad Rai murder case. The party could not start campaign for him as there was confusion over his candidature.
BSP had fielded Ansari’s wife as the dummy candidate of the party from the constituency. Her nomination was rejected, Upadhyay said.
The candidature of Hemant Yadav, the RPI candidate, was also rejected as he had not filed affidavit with his nomination papers.
The nomination papers of seven Independent candidates were also rejected for want of valid proposers.
The candidates could withdraw their nomination by April 2. Polling here will take place on April 16 with 123 other constituencies of the country in the first phase.
