WITH THE State Election Commission issuing notification for the Urban Local Bodies elections on Monday, the fate of Chief Minister’s programme at Meerut on Wednesday hangs in balance.
State Election Commissioner Aparmita Prasad Singh said with the notification of the election the ‘model code of conduct’ had come into effect. “No permission has been sought by the C M’s office for distribution of the Kanya Vidyadhan cheques and unemployment allowances at Meerut”, Singh said adding that “now the people’s representatives will have to seek the permission of the SEC before attending a public programme”.
He said government officials could distribute cheques of Kanya Vidyadhan Yojana and unemployment allowances. “If the CM is participating he could do so only after getting green signal from the SEC,” he said.
Singh warned that election in such Nagar Nigams, Nagar Palika Parishad and Nagar Panchayats would be countermanded where the model code was violated.
“During panchayat election too the SEC had countermanded the election in the gram panchayat and zila panchayat areas in which the model code was violated.
We will keep watch on the activities of politicians and ministers during the election”, he said.
“The model code will be effective in the urban areas only and politicians can participate in the public programmes organised in the rural areas. Still there will be ban on the movement of ministers in government vehicles or with police escorts in urban and rural areas”, he said.
Singh said till the completion of the poll process there would be no transfer of government employees and all recruitment process in various government departments would be stopped.
