A Mumbai-based businessman, Kishore Chauhan (49) was arrested on Wednesday for raping his two daughters over nine years on the guidance of astrologer Hasmukh Rathod.
The 60-year-old astrologer told Kishore that his business would flourish if he did so.
Police said Kishore used to have a housekeeping business, but his contract was not renewed. He tried many businesses without success. “In 2000, Kishore approached Rathod who told him to have a sexual relationship with his elder daughter, who was 12 then,” said Inspector V. Bhosle.
Police said Kishore raped his daughter repeatedly over the years with help from Anjana. When Kishore’s fortunes didn’t change, he approached Rathod again last year. “Rathod then told him to have sex with his younger daughter,” said Police Sub-Inspector A Gopal. Police said Rathod too would force himself on the girls in front of the parents.
“On Tuesday, she came to my mother and opened up to save her younger sister, who is 17 years old. I took her to the police,” said Vijay Parmar, the girls’ uncle.
Rathod and Chauhan’s wife, Anjana (46), were also arrested.
Advocate Edgar Braganza, who is representing the accused, said: “The parents wanted to marry the elder daughter to a relative, to which she objected. Rathod, a family friend, advised her to listen to her parents. The sisters then cooked up this story.”
