There was pandemonium at Byculla's Masina Hospital on Tuesday night as a mob smashed the doors and windows of the burns department to protest the molestation of two patients by a ward boy and a junior doctor.
The hospital’s CEO Firdaus Commissariat tried to intervene, but was allegedly attacked too. He is currently recuperating in Masina’s intensive care unit. “I was only trying to hear them out,” he said.
Even as the police arrested the accused, Dr B Sahini and ward boy Ramesh Chavan, the hospital staff went on strike to protest the attack. The hospital virtually shut down, with only the ICU and premature delivery unit functioning. Most patients were transferred to other hospitals. “My father, an asthma patient, is in the ICU. His daily x-ray and blood test were not done. I fear I’ll have to move him to another hospital,” said Mangesh Thorat, a businessman.
The molestation victims, two sisters aged 16 and 22 respectively, alleged that the accused took them to a conference room on the pretext of dressing their wounds and molested them. They were on Wednesday shifted from the hospital, but were refused admission at many hospitals as they did not have the discharge papers, their relatives said. They were finally admitted to Saboo Siddique Hospital.
“My younger daughter was eager to get her SSC results (to be declared on Thursday). Now both my daughters are in shock,” said their father.
