“We have not got any call from my son, his wife and child in the past two days. The last time we spoke to them, my son said the water has reached the first floor of their hotel in Srinagar,” said Dombivli resident Vasant Shinde, 70, who has been waiting to hear from his son, who left for Srinagar four days ago.

Vikrant Shinde, 44, his wife Archana, 38, and eight-year-old daughter Viviya left Dombivli on September 5. “They had called on September 6 to tell us about the spots they had visited and their meeting with their friend Rakesh. The next evening, Vikrant called to say that it was raining heavily in Srinagar and there was no way to get out of their fourth floor hotel room,” said Vasant Shinde.

While Vikrant is the trustee of St Joseph English School in Dombivli, Archana is the principal of the school. With no information from government sources and no way to get in touch with their children, the Shindes feel helpless.

“There no helpline number to trace their location. His mother has been just crying since the time she heard about the floods. The government should at least set up helplines for information on tourists,” said Shinde.
