Mumbai: Lalu to undergo open heart surgery today
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, who was admitted to a Mumbai hospital on Monday, will require a cardiac surgery, doctors said on Tuesday.
Rashtriya Janata Dal chief, Lalu Prasad Yadav will undergo an open heart surgery on Wednesday morning at Asian Heart Institute, Bandra-Kurla Complex. After two-day long detailed medical investigations, doctors at the hospital found that Yadav’s aortic valve has narrowed as a result of stenosis, a condition caused by infection, calcium deposits or congenital problems, and requires immediate surgery.
“We will perform an aortic valve replacement and also an aortic repair surgery on him (Yadav). He also has minor blockages which don’t need medical attention as of now,” Dr Ramakanta Panda, managing director, AHI told HT. Doctors will correct the two conditions in one surgery.
Yadav was admitted to the hospital on Monday morning. “He did not have any specific symptoms. Majority of patients having aortic valve stenosis will not have any symptoms initially. We will require putting him on a heart-lung machine to perform the surgery,” said Dr Panda who is a renowned cardiac surgeon. He was a part of the team that performed a bypass surgery on former Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh.
Dr Vijay DSilva, medical director of the hospital said that the surgery will last for around five hours. Yadav’s wife, Rabri devi and children have accompanied him to the hospital. The political leader will remain hospitalised for at least a week.
