It’s that time of the year again when Mumbai brings out its sweaters, jackets, tweeds, fleece and furs. Fur? In Mumbai? Unbelievable as it may sound, stores are already stacked with heavy woollens for the city’s brief brush with winter.
“I know Mumbai has a three-day winter, but you still need a sweater for that,” says Gagan Singh, managing director, Benetton. Though she declines to say exactly what percentage Mumbai contributes to the sale of the company’s winter collection, she says sales in the “warmer regions of India constitute about 25 per cent of our woollen sales”.
Wills Lifestyle sells winter jackets, woollen blazers, woollen trousers besides fleece, Promod swears by its woollen overcoats, dresses and cardigans. Mango sells winter coats, anoraks, parkas, jackets and boots. And Benetton has gone whole hog, complete with fleece and furs.
Companies say the fur is for the “Mumbaiites who travel extensively, kids heading to US universities and NRIs who come to India to shop”.
“There is a demand for winter wear in markets like Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore from consumers who travel within the country and abroad during winter,” says Atul Chand, VP marketing, ITC Lifestyle.
“The winter merchandise at our store is doing much better than we expected, thanks to people who travel overseas,” adds Nitin Chhabra, business head, GANT India.
But keeping the Mumbai winter in mind, most stock light woollens. “Our flagship store in Mumbai offers softer and lighter knits, woollens, argyle knits and tweedy knits,” Chhabra adds.
