Infosys Chairman NR Narayana Murthy, among five others, was honoured with the Lakshmipat Singhania - IIM Lucknow National Leadership Awards on Saturday.

The awards were given away in three categories - business, science and technology and community service.

The award for science and technology was presented to eminent scientist CNR Rao. The community service award went to 'water man' of Rajasthan Rajendra Singh.

Three awards in the young leader category were given to Mallika Srinivasan of TAFE in the business category, Shirish B Purohit in science and technology and Rajesh Kumar in community service.

Congratulating the winners after presenting the awards, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said, "Today we have created in this country an economic environment and I believe a political environment as well. Though there are some ups and downs from time to time."

He said that once upon a time, very few Indian companies had revenues of one billion dollars. But, today young entrepreneurs can stand up and say that they are going to build a billion dollar company.

Chidambaram said excellence should be the motto of the country.

The Finance Minister said, "we must set up education institutions which must be among the world's best. We must have roads which are among the best in the world. Because that is striving for excellence."
