The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday rejected Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf's reported claims about the Kargil conflict in his soon to be published memoirs and said it was India's historic victory in 1999.

It was not Pakistan but India that registered a historic diplomatic and military victory in Kargil in 1999 during the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA)'s rule, party president Rajnath Singh told reporters on Monday.

According to reported excerpts from the book, In the Line of Fire, that will be released in the US later on Monday, Musharraf has noted that the 1999 conflict contributed to initiatives on the Kashmir issue.

"The claims made by Musharraf regarding the Kargil war in his book are baseless. In fact the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government ensured that the international community should understand in the post-Kargil era that Pakistan has become a centre of terror," the BJP chief said.

Singh said the Pakistan president had written blatant lies about the Kargil conflict in his book.
