Music, local cuisine and more: Prabhu’s budget has something for everyone

Rail minister Suresh Prabhu seems to have left no stone unturned to ensure an enjoyable experience for the seven billion passengers who ride the Indian railways network annually.

His second budget had something for everybody: aam admi, those looking for some luxury, women passengers, senior citizens and the differently-abled.

For the well-heeled

Tejas service: Operating at 30 kmph and above it will offer on board services such as entertainment, local cuisine, wi -fi on board

For the middle-class

* Humsafar service: Fully air-conditioned third AC service with optional service for meals

* Uday: Double-decker AC express service on some of the busiest routes.

For the not-so-privileged

* Antyodaya Express: A long-distance, fully unreserved, superfast train on dense routes.

* Deen Dayalu coaches: Will be introduced in some long-distance trains

Other passenger amenities

* E-catering services to be increased from 40 stations to over 400 stations.

* Bar-coded tickets to be introduced at select stations

* Cleaning of coach on demand to be introduced

* CCTVs to be installed at all tatkal ticket counters

* Tickets will be sold from hand-held terminals at select stations

* Online booking of retiring rooms, mechanised laundries to provide clean and hygienic bed rolls.

Women and senior citizens

* 33% reservation to women from reserved quota in catering services.

* Middle bays in coaches to be reserved for women

* Children menu to be introduced on pilot basis on trains

* All India 24X7 helpline and CCTV surveillance to ensure safety of women travelers.

* Lower berth quota for senior citizens to be increased by 50%.

For the differently-abled

* Online booking of wheelchairs and Braille-enabled new coaches

* One disabled-friendly toilet in all platform in A1 class stations in 2016-17

* All stations to be made disabled-friendly

* One-time reservation for the differently abled for availing concessions while making online booking

* Cleaning of coach on demand to be introduced
