Muslims won Kargil for India, not Hindus: Azam Khan

Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan has kicked up yet another political storm by saying that India won the Kargil War solely because of Muslim soldiers and no Hindu soldier was behind the victory.

Addressing a rally in Ghaziabad on Monday afternoon, the senior Uttar Pradesh minister while asking “Hindus brothers” to embrace Muslims, said,”…isliye mohabbat karo ki Kargil ki pahadiyo ko fateh karne wala koi Hindu nahi tha, balki Kargil ki pahadiyo ko nara-e-takbeer Allah-Hu-Akbar kehkar fathe karnewale Musalman fauji the… (love us because peaks of Kargil were not conquered by Hindus, but by Muslim soldiers raising the battlecry of God is the Greatest).”

Reacting to Khan’s statement, former army chief General VK Singh said it wasn’t any particular community but “Indians” who won the battle for India.

This is not the first time the Uttar Pradesh leader’s statements have created a controversy. The SP leader had recently indirectly called the Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial nominee Narendra Modi a dog. He later claimed the media had twisted his remarks.

Khan on Monday called Modi's close aide Amit Shah a goon, saying he had come to Uttar Pradesh to “create terror”. “Amit Shah, who has come to UP to create terror and is also an accused under section 302 (killing), is ‘gunda No. 1’," Khan said about the BJP state campaign manager at a rally in Muslim-dominated Masuri area.

“It is unfortunate to have to refer to him as a ‘gunda’ but he who is accused of killing cannot be called a nice guy," Khan added.

Addressing Monday’s rally in support of SP candidate from Ghaziabad, Sudan Rawat, Khan said: "The BJP doesn't have anything but hate in its pocket."
