Four policemen were injured in stone pelting by villagers in Kutba area of Muzaffarnagar district, where they had gone to arrest a person in connection with a case of communal violence.

The mob was protesting against the arrest of a person in connection with the violence that erupted in the village in September. “Three police vehicles were damaged last night,” SSP HN Singh said. A case has been registered against the villagers, he added.

Eight people, including a woman, were killed and their houses burnt on September 8 in the village as violent clashes erupted in the western Uttar Pradesh district.

Meanwhile, district authorities have extended the prohibitory orders under Section 144 until January 15 with immediate effect.

Additional district magistrate Indermani Tripathi told reporters that the step was taken to maintain law and order in view of the festival season.

The communal riots had claimed 60 lives and displaced 50,000 people in Muzaffarnagar.
