“My husband told Ramprasad Gupta [brother of Lakhan Bhaiya] that he would not go to the high court since we were under threat.” Aruna Bheda had told this to the special investigation team (SIT) in September 2009, nearly three years after her husband Anil had witnessed the alleged fake encounter killing of Ramnarayan Gupta alias Lakhan Bhaiya.

According to Aruna’s statement, Anil had refused to go to court when approached by Gupta, a lawyer, because he feared for his life.

A few days before he disappeared, Anil was receiving calls from people telling him that he should keep a low profile until ‘matters cool down’, said the charge sheet that contains various conversations he had.

On several occasions, the couple had told the SIT investigating the case that they were under threat.

According to Aruna, Anil had witnessed the alleged fake encounter of Lakhan in 2006. He had then insisted that they family move away from their Vashi home and live at Aruna’s parents’ home in Ghatkopar. “He told me it was not safe to live there,” Aruna said. However, Anil disappeared on March 13 this year.
