Ang Lee, who won an Oscar for Best Director for Life Of Pi (2012), couldn't help but feel overwhelmed while going up to collect the golden statuette. This was his fifth Academy Award nomination.
While giving his acceptance speech, a visibly overwhelmed Lee began with a big thank you to everyone associated with the project. He said, "Thank you, movie God…Everybody who worked with me on Life Of Pi. I want to thank you for… I really want to thank you for believe in this story and share this incredible journey with me. (sic)"
Suraj Sharma, who played Pi Patel in the film, sat teary-eyed when he watched his director walk up to the stage. Lee couldn't help but praise the debutant actor, saying, "Wonderful cast. Suraj, where are you? You're a miracle. He's playing the young Pi, carrying the movie. Everyone of you in the cast. I cannot waste this time talking about them. You're the golden statue in my heart."
The Brokeback Mountain (2005) director, to everyone's surprise, said "namaste" to round off his acceptance speech. He said, "My Indian crew, I love you. My Canadian crew, I love you. My family in Taiwan. My wife, Jane Lin. We'll be married 30 years this summer… I love you. My boys, Han and Mason, thank you for your support. Thank you, Academy. Xie xie, namaste."
