The mysterious death of two women sparked protest demonstrations in Shopian town of south Kashmir, 52 kms from here, prompting police to use force to maintain law and order, officials said today.
They said villagers took to streets after bodies of the two women, Neelofer and her sister-in-law Asiya, were found near their orchard at Batapora-shopian this morning.
The agitated people demanded an inquiry into the mysterious death of the two women, who went missing last evening, and police lobbed tear gas shells and resorted to lathi charge to disperse the protesters.
The two women had gone to their orchard last evening and a search was carried out when they did not return, officials said.
Locals were furious after the dead bodies were found in the morning and went to the offices of the deputy commissioner and superintendent of police demanding an inquiry into the double murder.
Police said that the bodies have been sent for post mortem and more could be revealed once the report is out.
The situation is tense in the town but under control, police said.
