The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday ordered Rajiv Gandhi assassination convicts Nalini Sriharan and her husband Murugan to be housed together.
Nalini, who is serving a life sentence was transferred from the Puzhal central prison in North Chennai to Vellore prison where death row convict Murugan is lodged.
IG Prisons SK Dogra told HT, “Nalini was shifted to Vellore prison after the state government cleared her application for the transfer.” She had sought the transfer a few days back, he added.
Murugan, Santhan and Peraivalan were to be executed on September 9 before they got an eight-week reprieve when the Madras high court granted an interim stay on the hanging till their petition challenging the rejection of mercy petition is disposed of.
Police and jail officials present at Vellore told the media that Nalini broke down while entering the women’s cell.
Nalini had been shifted from Vellore prison to the central prison at Puzhal in Chennai last year after she complained of harassment by prison officials there.
