Three weeks after the Noida Police callously disclosed her identity to the media, the 17-year-old schoolgirl gangraped by five youths in a moving car, continues to be a recluse.
Her family told HT she had even refused to take her Class 10 board exams. “Our daughter doesn't go out but what hurts more is that her friends have stopped coming over,” her father told HT on Monday.
The family has been living in fear. “We were attacked a day after the case came to light. The family of the main accused is influential and can harm us,” said the father.
As for the probe into the police insensitivity in disclosing the victim’s identity and remarks that she knew one of the rapists and drank vodka willingly before being raped, it's been a farce.
No action has been taken against any police official for what was described as a “clerical error” causing her identity to be made public.
Quite the contrary has happened. The police have obtained a letter from the victim’s family, stating they were not hurt by the disclosure and comments by the police.
"They requested us to sign the letter, saying many cops could lose their jobs otherwise. What can we do? They are the ones probing the case,” said the father.
