In a major drug haul, Anti-Narcotic Cell sleuths seized more than eight kgs of high quality brown sugar and mescaline worth over Rs 25 crore in international market and arrested two persons here, police said on Friday.
"The two were arrested from the bus terminus outside Bandra station late last evening following a tip off," Deputy Commissioner of Police (ANC) Dilip Shrirao said.
The ANC had earlier said heroin has been seized from the duo but after conducting the tests, it was found to be brown sugar, an impure form of heroin.
According to a high ranking ANC official, the duo - aged 20 and 52 whose identity was not disclosed - hail from "poppy growing" belt of Madhya Pradesh and were in the city to sell off their contraband.
The ANC is now investigating about the local contacts of the duo and further arrests are likely, the official added.
Mescaline is a synthetic psychotropic substance banned in India, Shrirao said.
Both have been booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and were produced before a holiday court which remanded them to police custody till February 9.
