In recognition of services rendered in nation’s security, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Force, President Pratibha Devisingh Patil today awarded Presidential Standards to five Armoured Regiments of Black Elephant Division in an impressive ceremony at Patiala Cantonment.
“The Nation is proud of you and as a token of appreciation for your dedication; I take pride in presenting you with the Standards”, said President lauding the valour and courage of Indian Army regiments.
The Ceremony was a rarest of the rare occasion as it was for first time that 132 Tanks presented National Salute to its Supreme Commander during the ceremony, which is also second such occasion in history of Indian Army, when president has awarded Presidential Standards—also know as “Nishan”--on a single day.
The President awarded ‘Nishan’ to 5 Armoured Regiment, 70 Armoured Regiment, 73 Armoured Regiment, 74 Armoured Regiment and 6 Lancers.
“I also take this opportunity to emphasize that this honour bestowed upon your Regiments carries with its additional responsibility as well. They sacrifices and professionalism now expected of you, are more than even before, and I have no doubt in my mind that you will strive with dedication to keep the Standards flying High”, said the President to Armymen, while lauding services of Regiments spanning over 44 years.
Chief of Army Staff General VK Singh and Punjab Governor SHivraj Patil, Punjab Technical Education Minister Surjit Kumar Jiani, were also present amongst who’s who of Indian Army, which gathered here for this gala event. Major General R P Sahi, General Officer Commanding of the Armoured Division, was the parade commander of entire parade.
Nishan is a sign of recognition of the distinguished service rendered by the recipient unit. While the practice of carrying Colours into battle field has died out, the great tradition of receiving, holding and parading the Colours continues undiminished.
The Ceremony culimates with the release of the First day cover of all Five Regiments. Equipped with Anti Tank Missiles, The 70 Armoured Regiment has participated in 1971 Indo-Pak war, apart from various other counter insurgency operations. Known as “the Desert Rats’ 73 Armoured Regiments has rich history of participating in Op TRIDENT, OP Rakshak, Op Vijay and Op Parakaram. 74 Armoured and 5 Armoured Regiments participated in all major operations, while 6 LANCERS participated in Op Trident, Op Rakshak, operation Vijay apart from having credit to destroy Enemy positions across the Line of Control Since 1971 War.
Though, Punjab chief minister PS Badal and PPCC President Captain Amarinder Singh were invited, but both failed to turn up for function.
