A National Award-winning dancer-choreograher has been arrested by east Delhi police on alleged charges of molestation and wrongfully restraining his wife’s student, police said on Sunday. He also holds a Guinness Record.
The dancer, who also runs an NGO for differently-abled people, was arrested following a complaint filed by a woman who works as a teacher at the dance centre managed by his wife – also a renowned Kathak dancer and choreographer.
He was booked under Sections 354 (molestation) and 341 (wrongful restrains) of the IPC by the Madhu Vihar police station after a complaint was filed on Saturday, confirmed Sanjay Beniwal, joint commissioner of police (eastern range).
The dancer’s wife too has filed a separate complaint of domestic violence, unnatural sex, attempt to murder and abetment to suicide against him at the same police station. In her complaint, she also accuses her husband of allegedly sexually assaulting their differently-abled female students and employees.
A case has also been registered on the basis of the complaint. Since the complaint is also related to marital discord, senior police officers said his wife is being counselled.
The accused dancer’s name has not been revealed as it may compromise the victim’s identity.
According to the teacher’s complaint, a copy of which is with HT, she had met him when he was looking for sponsors for one of his programmes. A few days ago, she had gone with him to a bank in Daryaganj for sponsorship. While returning to the dance centre in IP Extension, he allegedly put his hand on her shoulder and hugged her.
“He started behaving in an indecent manner after they reached office. Though the woman reminded him that he was her mentor’s husband and she had high regards for him, he continued to molest her and stopped only when somebody knocked at the door,” a police officer said, quoting the woman’s complaint.
After the incident, the complainant learnt that he had tried to molest other female students and employees as well. She claimed that she has a video tape wherein a disabled student admitted that while on tour to Bangalore, he allegedly forced her to share a room with him and sexually assaulted her.
Nearly six months ago, the choreographer’s wife had filed a complaint of domestic violence against him. In her fresh complaint, she said she had withdrawn her complaint after he gave it in writing to the police that he will end his affairs with other women and stop abusing her. “But he physically assaulted her on Saturday morning after which she decided to file a fresh complaint,” the officer added.
